Upon their arrival, police were immediately confronted by a sizable group of 30 to 40 men and women. One of the individuals involved in the brawl had a handgun, and at least one of them fired at the officers, striking one of them in the left arm. The officers fired back, striking four of the assailants. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, one suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is no longer a suspect in the case. An additional eight individuals were taken into custody on similar charges. Despite the obvious danger that officers may face if they don’t have a clearly defined objective and strike immediately against an active shooter, the LAPD leadership has again made it a priority to charge not only the shooting, but rather the victim. The City of Los Angeles has identified the shooter as 26-year-old Menisa Farooq. They’re not charging him with assault on an officer, however, despite finding a witness to corroborate that Farooq was standing around with a gun as officers moved into the conflict, and was later caught firing a shot at police. To make matters even more outrageous, the LAPD has charged the man with unlawful use of a weapon. Indeed, they’ve even escalated the charge, raising it from a misdemeanor to a felony. That’s right. For merely displaying a weapon in the same area that the Los Angeles Police Department is tasked with making sure the public isn’t harmed by, Farooq faces a felony charge. Fortunately, the legal system has a mechanism to address absurd behavior from those who wear the badge. If the LAPD’s case is not immediately thrown out by the court, Farooq faces a maximum of three years in prison, and the full weight of being charged with an additional felony. The lack of a clear objective and predetermined plan should be brought to the attention of Farooq’s defense team, but unfortunately, there’s little hope for the case going forward. There’s no question that he was standing with a weapon when police entered the conflict, 3e33713323
